My 10 Days in the Broward General Hospital

April 17 – Tuesday
Good morning everyone. I was rushed to the emergency room on Sunday night by my Mom and close friend Jack and spent that night and next day having tests done for a spider bite on my leg. I’m still in hospital waiting for my tests now. My very first stay ever and hopefully never again but they have been really great to me. I still have no idea what’s wrong other than a mysterious bite from last weeks photo shoot that I have been nursing for about 5 days. Flowers arrived this morning.. I love them. And I’m reading all your letters. You have really cheered me up. Thank you. Big Hugs, Jax

It really makes me feel a little better about my up coming stay in the hospital next monday. I am having surgery and I’ll be there for 4 days. I am very nervous about it, cause no boby likes to go or even stay at the hospital. Just want to say that you even look good in that hospital robe. Have a great day Jacqueline.

Good night everyone. Promised to let you know the update. My blood tests came back perfect so Doc can increase the strength of the IV anti-biotics to help battle. I had a good day today and looks like they caught it early enough to keep it out of my blood stream. Now my strike team is concentrating on healing my leg hopefully with no scar. Did you know that I could have lost my leg from this if they didn’t catch it within a month? I’m in shock..

Garland Fahrner: I am so happy that it was caught in time. If you need care when you get home remember I am a Paramedic, Get better real soon. You are missed

Bob Maltais: Vancomycin is excellent stuff for bad traveling infections… it`s using the heavy duty artillery… It is very effective against resistant strains of bacteria… No side effects is a big plus… watch for any secondary infections if you have to stay on it for a long period of time though…

Stephen Minotti: Naomi told me you got bit by a spider is this the reaction of the spider bite? If there is anything you need I’d be glad to help!!!

Philip Meade: WOW!! Great!! Thank you, God, for taking care of Jackie!!! Yes, I knew that you could lose your leg. Infections like that grow roots and can’t be killed by antibiotics. I didn’t want to worry you with horror stories, especially if they didn’t apply to you. Thank God, you got there right away and you’re going to be all right. And don’t worry about a little scar, you are so beautiful nobody will notice it. Just a little smudge. Hopefully it won’t show at all, but who cares, it’s your spirit that shines so bright!! Have a great day!!! xoxo!!

These beautiful flowers just arrived and let me say that the timing couldn’t have been any better. I was just being told that they will be doing a minor surgery on my leg to remove the remaining infection. Of coarse the news is upsetting but seeing these gorgeous flowers really helped soften the news. Thank you Garland. Your a jem.

Good morning friends. So I’m still here. LoL. But they are taking really great care of me. The best medical staff in the country. Special thanks to my friend Bob Saxon for sneaking me in starbucks :o ) It’s really nice of you to check in on me. The flowers make my room smell amazing, my nurses and I have story time all day long, my doors open so the staff can help me vote to finish our top 20 count down, I’m allowed to go for walks on my floor (LoL) to visit the other patience and I’m now beginning to feel like this is more of a resting vacation than illness.

Two of my favorite nurses taking good care of me. (Stacy-Ann and Kurt) I had a woman come in yesterday to clean my room. She was from Jamaica. (Dawn – In photo below left) I hadn’t met her yet and she said to me. Are u a singer and do u believe in God? She told me that I was in danger and moving down the wrong path this was Gods way of getting me back on track. He’s sent me here to protect me from something very dangerous and make sure that I follow the path I was meant for. Thanks Dawn for the great advise.

Thank you so much to my new friends who helped me heal: Dawn , Genny, Melissa, Gus, John, Stacy-Ann, Annette, Shawntel, Dr. Guarneri, Dr.DeGraff-Roberson, Dr Ralph Guarneri, Dr Joy Gposzcyk, Dr Pano Mitropoulos, Dr Justin Rubin, Dr Favroeand of coarse Dr Wilfred McKenzie and his lovely sister Doctor Rona McKenzie.

Saturday:
Tracy Timberlake came by to visit me yesterday. She dropped off some more of her amazing healing teas & sang me the song we had been working on together before I got bit. She sounded amazing. I wish I could have sneaked you a recording of it. I’m going to be working on an album for her as soon as I get back into the studio and you’ll be seeing us performing together one day.

20120424-132205.jpg

Sunday: Good morning all. Happy Sunday. The chief of staff of the hospital who happens to be my main Doctor (Dr Wilfred McKenzie) and his lovely sister Doctor Rona McKenzie have been watching over me like angles. Because of them and the amazing teams of specialists at Broward General I am healing really well & avoided a very dangerous illness. I’m still here but getting stronger every day. Its amazing how a friendly well trained and educated staff can keep you out of pain and make you feel like your among friends.

They want to continue the IV antibiotics to be certain that its totally gone. In picture Dr Justin Rubin, Dr Pano Mitropoulos, and Dr Favroe. These amazing Doctors have been more than wonderful, they are the top in their field and have looked after me with such gentle care.

Sunday:
I miss little Valentine so much! Hope I can go home soon. My Mom says he walks into my room every day looking for me and then sits by the front door most of the day waiting for me to come home. Latest update: The Surgeon likes how I’m healing and my white count is finally normal. They may send me home soon. I’m really tired today but they say that sleep helps you heal.

Monday
After a tough Sunday of trying different things, my charge nurse John saved the day when he came on the night shift and made me so much more comfortable. Mom’s been by my side every single day. She hurts when I hurt and it’s very stressful for her. I try to make her go home early because she needs her sleep. My close friend Jack Abdo has visited every day after work as well. You really get reminded of who your friends are when something like this happens. I Slept well and were up at it again with the IVs and blood work to check on my progress. So listen to my video with me and have a great Monday. (Click Here for video)

I wanted to say thank you so much for all your sweet messages and prayers. You guys have helped me get through this more than you know. I’ve been reading your messages over the 10 days that I’ve been here and many of you have asked to send me flowers and gifts. I love that you have…. But I would love it even more if you would buy one of my albums. Every song you purchase allows me to help others in ways that really matter. That would make me happy. It means the world. Here’s a link to my music page: even consider getting one for a friend..

I wanted to tell you my experience at Broward General Hospital in hopes that if it does happen to you, you’ll know what to do. I was bitten by a spider at a photo shoot. 1st day it was a 4″ red circle with a black mark in center then within 3 days the area doubled in size and was the worst pain I had ever felt. I tried warm compresses but nothing helped even when it opened and started draining. My regular Doctor prescribed an oral antibiotic but turned out that my immune system had built a protective wall around the infection that kept them from penetrating. So basically I had a core inside my leg that was doubling in size by the day and very infected. I needed to be hospitalized to fight the infection and specialists were brought in to study my case daily and decide on a treatment. At first they used an IV antibiotic which did slow down the bacteria but then another had to be added called Vancomycin. The combo of the 2 makes you very tired and normally effects your liver but I was lucky I had a strong immune system and great liver. The IVs were every 8 hours and 2 blood draws were done around the clock to check my white count, liver, potassium, etc. for 10 days. The wound luckily drained and shrank down on its own with a heating pad on it constantly, different ointments and lots of clean dressing changes and I’m told will close up with hopefully no scar. Although it was painful, They got me on my feet walking right away to prevent pneumonia and help with circulation. It was amazing watching my body heal so quickly. They are releasing me today with oral antibiotics, ointments and dressings. Although this was a spider bite, you can get this type of skin infection if bacteria gets in a cut or your immune system isn’t strong and your develop a boil. Its highly contagious if it gets into a cut or scratch on your skin .They tell me that MRSR staph is a common strain that exists in our nose, on our clothing and all public places like shopping cart handles, door knobs, bathrooms. Everywhere. Anti bacterial wipes and washing your hands really help but only bleach left on it for 10 minutes is 99% effective at killing it so be very careful. Building up your immune system with healthy foods and vitamins and keeping your skin very clean is your best bet at prevention. Of coarse don’t get bit because the bugs (brown recluse spider) usually carry the staph. But its no joke. Even if it looks like a boil, never try to deal with this on your own. Don’t pop it. Use warm sterile compresses and get to the ER quickly. The bacteria literally eats away healthy skin and tissue, can get into your blood stream and you can loose legs or even die from it. I was so lucky that my friend Kurt (Nurse at ER Broward) recognized it early and got me to the ER fast before it went septic. Plus I can’t tell you how your prayers and letters helped me to stay strong, have faith and stay positive. I’m including a list of all the Doctors. Nurses and care givers who’s combined efforts helped heal me, kept me informed, calm and comfortable. Stay safe. Big hugs, and thanks for caring so much about me. Xoxo, Jax

Things I would love to do…

One of the questions that I’m asked alot on my “Ask Jax” page is about how I spend my down time so I thought it would be fun to put together a quick wish list.

Ask Jax:
Dear Jax, You work all the time and I’m wondering if you ever take time off. What do I like to do on your down time? John -NJ

Dear John,
I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing with my dog Valentine and going on driving trips. In fact I have driven across the U.S several times in my life. Driving trips are something I did with my Mom as a little girl and still love to do. It clears my head and encourages creativity. In fact, most of my poems have been written on long drives when I get inspired and pull over to write on the side of the road by a beach, on a mountain or even overlooking huge lakes that seem to go on forever. When you drive you not only have time to think, you see things that you would miss flying from place to place. The journey means the most to me. Here are a few journeys I would love to take one day. Thanks for the great question. Xoxo, Jax

20120414-194320.jpg

I lived in Australia when I was a little girl with my parents so I was way to young to go on a sunset climb of the Sydney Harbor Bridge but this is definitely on my list for the future. Check out my complete list posted at www.JacquelineJax.com

20120414-194946.jpg20120414-195000.jpg

When I first heard about the launch of this 664ft ship in 2002, I added it to my wish list. How amazing would it be to wake up in a new destination every few days? I love to explore and this would be an experience of a lifetime. The World residences at sea circumnavigates the globe, spending extensive time in the most exotic and well-traveled ports of the world. 165 private residences own the ship and determine it’s yearly coarse. There’s a restaurant, spa, and even Bali beds where you can fall asleep beneath a starry sky. What a dream!

I’ve always done alot of traveling and one of my favorite places is San Diego California. Not only is the weather perfect all year long, there is always something exciting happening there. For my third “love to do” on my list, I would love to study photography in the beautiful city of San Diego. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m obsessed with taking pictures and I think it would be such an enjoyable time out to learn more about this art. Pictures not only capture all your memories, they tell the stories of your life.

Places I would love to visit…

20120413-194502.jpg

Fairmont Le Château Frontenac Québec City
Everyone has a place or two that they have always wanted to visit and Québec City is at the top of my wish list. With its castle-like architecture and turrets, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is truly every girl’s dream castle experience! Québec City, located on the St. Lawrence River in Canada has tradition, charm, history, and architecture with a distinct European flavor. Québec displays its French heritage in a variety of ways and the French language is preferred by the majority of the city’s citizens so I better start practicing my French now so I’ll be ready for my Summer vacation.

Landmark Vineyards, California Wine Country
Do you have fantasies of running away for a secret weekend getaway of romance and bliss? Who doesn’t. I discovered this winery online. Landmark has the answer before then question has been asked. Two guest rooms right in the middle of a working vineyard, where you can watch the grapes being harvested and smell the delicious fragrance of Gods natural gift on a crisp California morning.

Vineyard Story: Seeking an escape from the rapidly sub-urbanizing town of Windsor (20 miles north), Landmark’s founder, Damaris Deere Ford, relocated the winery in 1989 to a spectacular piece of property at the base of Sugarloaf Ridge in Kenwood. She also brought in her son Michael Colhoun and daughter-in-law Mary as partners, making it a real family business.
Ford is the great-great-granddaughter of John Deere, and the John Deere company’s signature forest green pops up throughout the property, whether on a pair of rocking chairs or on an antique 1946 tractor near the front gate. The white-shuttered, stand-alone Cottage sleeps up to four and is ideal for families — it has a bedroom, a foldout couch in the living room, a washing machine and dryer, a small front porch, and a spacious, fully equipped kitchen. The smaller Suite has two twin beds (which can be pushed together), a fireplace, and a private patio with views of Sugarloaf Ridge and Hood Mountain.
Both rooms are a stone’s throw from the bocce court and California mission-style tasting room, so guests can sip freely, knowing it’s a quick stumble home through the vines. 707/833-0053, landmarkwine.com, from $170. (original post from CNN.com) facebook.com/landmarkwine

Target Destination: Time for a vacation? What if you could stay here for less than $200 a night? This hotel is the Albergo California on the Amalfi Coast of Positano, Italy. Anyone been here yet?

Maria Cinque makes a point of chatting with every one of her guests, if not at check-in (which her son Gianni sometimes handles), then at breakfast the next morning.
She’s particularly delighted to meet Americans, as she and her husband Antonio lived in the Bronx for nine years, returning to Italy in 1974 to run a family hotel five minutes’ walk from the center of Positano — and to teach their children “what it means to be Italian,” in Maria’s words.
Six of the 15 guestrooms are in the original Palazzo Bruno, dating from 1777, including four upstairs rooms with 18th-century ceiling frescoes. Many regulars prefer the ground-floor rooms 51 to 55 because they open directly onto the magnificent, long entrance terrace and enjoy postcard views of Positano framed by ivy trailing off the shady trellis. At sunset, small groups gather on the terrace to sip wine, plan the next day, and pinch themselves, realizing that they’ve got the same view as the chichi Le Sirenuse hotel down the street for one-third the price.

Wade Rogers : Quebec : Been there too, you’ll love it. Old Quebec is beautiful.

André Levert: Quebec: I’ve been a couple of Times. You would love it!! So much history in there.

Philip Mead: Very pretty in Quebec in the summer. Everything is so fresh and purified by the winter. Also, I would love to visit the West coast for a number of reasons, and also a trip through Europe starting in the Mediterranean and ending in London.
