Are you ready to charge up your music marketing? Getting your music into films and video games is something that musicians ask me all the time. In fact, on my last Behind The Music interview (http://tobtr.com/s/7825193) an artist inquired about it right on the show.
I have actually answered this question before for Nick Vandell back in April. (here) and mapped out a great plan for pursuing that market but I was able to add some additional insights into content by talking to you on scope so be sure to watch the video.
Film/TV Music Supervisor: Salary range: $2,000 – $500,000

Salary range: $18,000 – $150,000
Careers in video game audio are among the fastest growing in the music business. Though salaries start low—$18,000 for an assistant engineer who creates rough mixes in the studio—they can rise quickly. Audio directors often earn up to $140,000 per year for overseeing video game projects, while audio tool developers can pull in as much as $150,000 for writing code.
Film/TV Music Supervisor
Salary range: $2,000 – $500,000 (per project)
Music supervisors select tunes to be used in motion picture projects. Salaries start low in this field—$2,000 – $5,000 for a TV project—but can increase quickly. Low budget feature films yield $10,000 – $45,000, and Hollywood blockbusters can draw $150,000 – $500,000.
- Build a page dedicated to the job you want.
- Be sure to create pages that reflect your brand in a clean and uncluttered way.
- Include your contact information,
music samples and a brief description of the service you wish to offer that particular industry professional.
- Try to imagine the avatar of one industry professional who you would be asking to look at your music and speak directly to them.
- Create a demo sampling of music that you would like to pitch to a specific film producer or company to get their attention. You can post that in different ways and embed it into your page.
For instance, create a YouTube video with some visuals and title the video targeting that industry. You may also want to place the sampler on your reverbnation and soundcloud account.
- Get SEO friendly with a title and tags targeting just that so if a producer was searching they would easily find you.
- Hit LinkedIn – you’ll want to locate contacts for that industry and directly email each of them a personalized letter including why you think your music would fit their work perfectly.
- KNOW THE COMPANY : This does require a little home work on your part. When I suggest an artist to a film producer I already know something about the type of films they produce and I know that the artist is a great fit. So filtering out the right people for your work is most important.
- Hollywood lunch time, think of yourself walking through a popular restaurant filled with producers. Introduce yourself, exchange information, be sure to join all of their social networks and engage often in support of their work.
- FOLLOW UP: Typically it may require several attempts to get someone’s attention because it’s not just you they see. But be patient and work on building strong relationships with a few companies rather than mass marketing to hundreds.
- Build up your connections with these companies slowly and make them count. When they are in need, they will remember you if your staying in touch by being engaged and supportive of their work.
