When I think of Musicians who inspire me, three artists always come to my mind.
They make me smile when I see them and I stop what ever I’m doing to to listen to their words. The lives they must live are truly shaped by their talents and they enjoy each day of the journey never looking at the future like there is an end they have to reach, instead it’s a continuation of all the wonderful moments that music has brought them.
I adore Willy Nelson and how he inspires us. He doesn’t think he’s any better than anyone else, he doesn’t stand on a pedestal, he just does what he loves and is an amazing story teller. He doesn’t hire musicians to tour with him, he gathers friends to become apart of his story. His life and theirs is richer for it, as are we for loving him. That’s why we love and adore him.
Kurt Cobain from Nirvana brought grunge into the mainstream. Their story is interesting. They were the soundtrack to teens lives in the nineties.
Iggy Pop once said,”Kurt Cobain was truly a nobody from nowhere who reached out and touched the world. And he may have touched it right in its wound”
In my opinion, he was a king of his genre. He changed the face of music in 90’s. I remember listening to his album “Smells like teem spirit” every time I drove my car in high school. Cobain is one of the most influential musicians of all time and most importantly, he never knew it. He only new the truth and inner conflicts that plagued him and his music was his relief. Perhaps that’s why we all still talk about him within each of our inner circles. In a way he was putting music to all of our stories. I wonder what he would be saying today…
Finally but certainly not last by any means.
My cousin Bill Evans is one of my greatest inspirations. There was magic in his fingers and I can only hope that by blood I may be even a fraction as innovative and talented as he was one day. There is never a time that I don’t pray for his guidance as I sit down at my piano or record any song. His picture is always right beside me in every note that I have ever sung. His music has inspired generations of musicians. Bill worked with the greatest musical talents of his generation and never once lifted his head nor hand in ego. His music was genius and still comes from that special light in his soul long after his death. I miss him very much.
